MARIPOSA ACADEMY
Jesse and Estela Gutierrez founded Mariposa Academy in 2002 with a powerful goal: to create a place where Hispanic children could thrive in school without sacrificing their culture or native language.
As Washoe County’s first dual-language school, Mariposa Academy was born out of a recognition that Hispanic students were often falling behind in traditional classrooms, facing barriers to academic success and opportunities for the future. In this video, Jesse and Estela Gutierrez share the school’s history and the community-wide impact of incorporating both English and Spanish language in learning.
